The ‘Brick Villa’ is a historic category one listed heritage house built in 1899, that underwent extensive alterations following the 2010 – 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.
Situated in St Albans, Christchurch the 'Brick Villa' is symmetrical in form and layout with a grand central hallway that leads you through the private spaces of the home, into the new modern extension located at the Northern end of the property. This large open plan living space with retractable full height glazing, provides a strong connection to the outside. Additionally, a new single width garage form slips past the living area to create a private courtyard that maximises sunlight and engages with the picturesque tree line of Abberley Park to the North.
Careful consideration was given to maintaining the existing buildings heritage features by preserving the intricate brick details and internal character features. In contrast the dark stained cedar clad extension offers clean lines and a bold modern form, seeking to strike a balance between old and new.
